Essential Safety Tips for Your Next Outdoor Adventure

Taking your students beyond the classroom walls opens a world of learning possibilities, but it also introduces a new set of safety considerations. At BOLT Coaching, we believe that prioritising safety and risk management empowers educators to lead impactful and worry-free outdoor adventures.

Dynamic Risk Assessment: Your Safety Toolkit

Think of a dynamic risk assessment (DRA) as your ever-evolving safety plan. It's about staying alert, anticipating potential hazards, and adjusting your approach in real-time. Here's how it works:

  • Identify Hazards: Consider the location, activity, group dynamics, and environmental factors. What could potentially go wrong?

  • Assess the Risk: How likely is the hazard to occur? What would the severity be if it did?

  • Control Measures: What steps can you take to minimise the risk (e.g., additional supervision, route changes, alternative activities)?

  • Constant Evaluation: Monitor the situation throughout your trip. Weather, group energy, and unexpected circumstances can all require a reassessment.

Pre-Trip Safety Checklist

Preparation is key! Before your adventure, consider these common hazards:

  • Terrain & Weather: Research potential hazards (steep trails, unpredictable weather, wildlife encounters) and plan accordingly.

  • Equipment & Gear: Ensure all equipment is functional and participants are appropriately dressed.

  • Student Needs: Be aware of individual medical conditions, allergies, or physical limitations.

  • Communication: Establish clear emergency procedures and ensure you have a reliable means of communication.

First Aid Fundamentals

Every trip leader should possess basic first aid knowledge. Here are a few critical skills:

  • Basic Wound Care: Cleaning and bandaging minor cuts and scrapes.

  • Sprains & Strains: Recognising and providing initial treatment.

  • Bites & Stings: Know how to manage common insect bites and allergic reactions.

  • CPR Certification: Highly recommended for all leaders, providing life-saving skills.
